A study from Ohio State University highlights the importance of soil pH in shaping microbial communities. Researchers discovered that while physical factors like soil acidity play a significant role in bacterial distribution, the interactions among bacteria, especially during nitrogen cycling, are vital. In this process, bacteria convert nitrogen compounds into forms that can become toxic under certain conditions.
